What are ingrown nails?

Ingrown nails are an unfortunate process in which the nail of (usually) big toe gets splits and grows itself into the surround soft tissue. The process of this occurring can lead to significant amounts of pain, discomfort and frequently - infection.

how are ingrown nails treated?

Depending on the nature of the ingrown nail it can be treated in a variety of ways. It is important to note first that there’s often confusion about whether a nail is ingrown or just infected. Often times simply treating the infection can resolve the problem without necessarily requiring invasive treatment. Conservative management includes antibiotics and soaking the foot to promote drainage. If this cannot resolve the issue then the offending nail can be removed.

Of note, nails with active infections should be cleared of their infections prior to attempting removal.
